On July 20 ,1695 French forces attacked Brandenburg factory that was located on the waterfront of St. Thomas and also on july 20th that same year a severe hurricane destroyed many of the buildings in the port. In 1705 the town grew to 69 houses this was due to growing harbor trade.The town kept growing to 82 houses in 1716 and in 1724 a free port was partially established, as trade in St. Thomas opened to ships of all nations on payment of low duties.
